The bridge is considered a central hub for freight rail traffic serving the seaports of Brake and Nordenham. At the same time, the new lift-swing bridge will provide greater capacity and safety for shipping through increased clearance height and a wider navigation channel. Once it enters service, planned for late 2027 or early 2028, the Port of Oldenburg will finally once again be accessible to seagoing vessels. At present, this is not possible because of a fixed temporary bridge over the Hunte.
