Approval Granted for 50 MW Battery Storage Facility at Wilhelmshaven Site

Uniper has received full approval for the construction and operation of a 50-megawatt battery storage facility at the former Wilhelmshaven power plant site. With this project, the company is supporting the transformation of the site and contributing to the energy transition in the region.

With the battery storage system, Uniper is helping to ensure a flexible and reliable electricity supply. Energy storage systems are crucial for the integration of renewable energies, as they balance fluctuations and improve grid stability. “The battery storage system was originally planned for the Heyden site in Petershagen/Lahde. However, the project could not be realized there due to grid connection challenges. Since a suitable grid connection was already available at the Wilhelmshaven site, Uniper decided to relocate the planned facility to Wilhelmshaven. The first components are already on site, and the complete relocation is expected to be finished by mid-2026,” reports overall project manager Harald Poppinga. “The approval is an important step for the future of the Wilhelmshaven site. With the battery storage system, we are creating a bridge between security of supply and the energy transition,” says Dr. Nadine Menning, Head of Energy Assets Northwest at Uniper. The Wilhelmshaven power plant was shut down in December 2021. Since then, Uniper has been driving forward the development of new projects at the site. Construction of a photovoltaic plant on the former ash disposal area recently began. A solar power plant with a planned annual output of 17,500 megawatt hours is being built on the site between the Alte Voslapper Deich and the southern Voslapper Groden. Commissioning is scheduled for July 2026.
