An inland waterway shuttle – a new transport option for heavy-load and project cargo organised by the Am Zehnhoff-Söns Group in cooperation with BLG LOGISTICS and a company from the construction machinery industry – has been running regularly between the ports of Bremen and the inland areas of western Germany since March.

Looking into the future is already possible in the Large Wave Flume of the Coastal Research Center in Hannover-Marienwerder. Researchers are currently testing the jacket structure of an offshore wind turbine with a total height in excess of 300 metres in one of the world’s largest wave flumes.

BLG and EUROGATE have pooled their expertise in Bremerhaven and are collaborating on projects for wind power components used in onshore and offshore projects – now under the brand name Eco Power Port. At the same time, BLG is further expanding its established transshipment business for onshore wind turbines at Neustädter Hafen.

Hydrogen plays a key role in the energy transition as an energy source, as a storage medium and as a replacement for fossil fuels, which is why Robert Habeck, the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs, and several state ministers for economic affairs issued grants for 23 extraordinary, forward-looking hydrogen projects in Germany in July. Twelve of those are based in Lower Saxony and Bremen.

Due to their position at the interface between land and sea, German ports are uniquely affected by climate change. Rising sea levels and extreme weather events like flooding, torrential rain and heatwaves, in particular, represent significant challenges for port locations.
