Seaborne cargo handling in Lower Saxony’s seaports continues to grow

OLDENBURG. At the annual press conference held jointly with the Lower Saxony Ministry for Economic Affairs, Transport and Building, Niedersachsen Ports GmbH & Co. KG, and Seaports of Niedersachsen GmbH, strong handling figures for 2025 were presented: 60.5 million tonnes were handled on the seaward side in Lower Saxony’s seaports—an increase of 9%! The figures reflect both the strong competitive position in the international market and the significant role of the ports as supra-regional logistics hubs. Lower Saxony’s port industry is investing strategically and continuously expanding its service offerings.
Container handling developed particularly dynamically, reaching around 1.47 million TEU (+74%). Overall, general cargo handling rose significantly to nearly 20 million tonnes. This also included approximately 1.63 million new vehicles handled seaward in 2025 in Cuxhaven, Emden, and Wilhelmshaven. While dry bulk cargo increased by 8% to 13.2 million tonnes, liquid bulk handling declined by 6% to 29 million tonnes, leaving total bulk cargo handling at 40.5 million tonnes, roughly at the previous year’s level.

New multi-purpose terminal planned for JadeWeserPort
WILHELMSHAVEN. Germany’s only deep-water port, JadeWeserPort, is set to be expanded with a new terminal. “It will be a multi-purpose terminal,” announced NPorts Managing Director Holger Banik at a press conference in March.
