Bremerhaven maintains its market position
BREMERHAVEN A study by the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL), commissioned by bremenports, confirmed in May 2026 Bremerhaven’s central role in international container traffic. Container throughput at the site rose in 2025 to 4.9 million TEU, an increase of 10.3 per cent. Bremerhaven therefore fulfils a dual function: as a “gateway” port for the hinterland and as an international “hub” for transhipment between deep-sea and feeder services. “The study provides impressive confirmation: Bremerhaven is and remains a central node in international container traffic. Our strength lies not only in the handling itself, but especially in our connections to the hinterland. A high-performing rail network is crucial here, because it can transport large volumes reliably, quickly and in a climate-friendly way over long distances—thereby directly determining our port’s competitiveness in international comparison. That is exactly where we are focusing our efforts, to secure market share and unlock new growth potential,” said Kristina Vogt, Bremen’s Senator for Economic Affairs, Ports and Transformation.
