HAMBURG In light of the ballot launched by ver.di on indefinite strikes in German seaports, the Zentralverband der deutschen Seehafenbetriebe (ZDS) called for reason and proportionality on 17 September. “Germany finds itself in a difficult economic situation. Industry and exports are under pressure, and companies are reviewing their locations and costs. In this situation, a sense of proportion and responsibility are needed. An indefinite strike would be a disproportionate step, given the current state of negotiations and the offer that ver.di has put to its members for a vote,” says Torben Seebold, chief negotiator for the ZDS. He points out that German seaports are in direct competition with other European port locations and that, in the event of prolonged disruptions, the flow of goods could simply be diverted there. “We have put forward a substantial offer that recognises the performance and commitment of the workforce whilst also taking into account the economic constraints of the companies,” Seebold continued.

BREMEN. From 21 September, the level crossing on Ludwig-Plate-Straße will undergo extensive renovation. The works are expected to last until 30 October. During this period, Ludwig-Plate-Straße will be closed to private motorised traffic in the vicinity of the level crossing.
