WILHELMSHAVEN The Wasserstraßen- und Schifffahrtsamt (WSA) Weser-Jade-Nordsee announced in March the successful completion of the major refurbishment and conversion of the sliding gate at the Wilhelmshaven sea lock. The lifting pontoon, together with the lock gate, was towed from the North Harbour to the naval base with the assistance of the tugs ‘Vogelsand’, ‘Fairplay 81’ and ‘Fairplay 65’. The 108-metre-long and 49-metre-wide heavy-lift floating crane “Gulliver” then lowered the gate from the lifting pontoon into the water before it was guided into the guide rails whilst afloat. “The deployment of such a colossal vessel is also a rare event for the Wasserstraßen- und Schifffahrtsamt (WSA) Weser-Jade-Nordsee,” said Julia Janßen, spokesperson for the WSA in Bremen.
