Leer, August 2021 | The seaport in Leer in East Frisia plays an important role not only when it comes to handling fertilizers, animal feed, bulk goods, iron or scrap. Also as a location where sustainable technologies for the shipping industry are developed and implemented, Leer has recently drawn attention repeatedly.
In spring, for example, the port was once again the venue for equipping a ship with innovative propulsion technology: an 18-meter-high Flettner rotor was installed on the multi-purpose freighter “Annika Braren” (Rörd Braren Bereederung, Kollmar an der Elbe). With the rotor, a rotating cylinder that acts like a sail, the consumption of fuel and thus the emissions such as CO2 can be reduced.
Overall, the fuel savings are around 10 to 13 percent. These are good arguments that can pave the way for a more climate-friendly future for commercial shipping in propulsion technology worldwide.
