‘Port Fitness Programme’ to boost the circular economy

20.08.2026

EMDEN As part of the German-Dutch Interreg programme ‘SCOBE’, representatives from German and Dutch seaports and inland ports, as well as from universities in both countries, met in Emden in August at the invitation of the Emden Port Development Corporation (EHFG). The aim of SCOBE is to future-proof the ports on both sides of the border and strengthen their role as hubs in the circular economy. During a harbour tour on the historic vessel ‘Ems’, Timo Siebahn and Reinhard Hegewald from the EHFG showed the participants what the seaport of Emden has to offer in terms of the circular economy. This includes plans to recycle ships, industrial equipment and offshore wind turbines, as well as the generation of district heating through the incineration of waste wood delivered by ships at a biomass power station in the inland port. The environmentally sound disposal of waste on site was also a key topic at the SCOBE partner meeting.
