Seaports in Lower Saxony close first half of the year with an increase in cargo handling

OLDENBURG With 31.1 million tonnes of seaborne cargo handled, the nine seaports in Lower Saxony recorded a 7 per cent increase in the first half of 2026 compared with the first half of 2025 (29.1 million tonnes). Container throughput totalled 898,211 TEU, representing an increase of 36 per cent (664,685 TEU in the first half of 2025). In total, more than 12 million tonnes of general cargo – comprising not only containers but also wind energy components, iron, steel, forestry products and rolling stock – were handled between January and June 2026. This represents a 25 per cent increase compared with the previous year (9.6 million tonnes in the first half of 2025). The handling of bulk cargo amounted to around 19.1 million tonnes, which is just under 2 per cent below the previous year’s figure (19.5 million tonnes in the first half of 2025). The volume of new vehicles handled at the three Lower Saxony automotive transhipment ports remained at the previous year’s level, totalling 842,411 units. “Overall, at the halfway point of the year, we can draw a positive conclusion regarding the development of cargo volumes in Lower Saxony’s seaports,” said Inke Onnen-Lübben, Managing Director of Seaports of Lower Saxony.
