Bremer Lloyd Werft to take over general cargo terminal

BREMERHAVEN. Lloyd Werft is set to become the new operator and long-term leaseholder of the former banana and general cargo terminal on Columbus Island in Bremerhaven. The property is situated on the Stromkaje at Steubenstraße 5. The shipbuilding company is part of the Heinrich Rönner Group and is based in Bremerhaven. It emerged as the successful bidder in the tender process, which began at the end of last year. This was reported by Robert Howe, managing director of the Bremen port management company Bremenports, at a meeting of the City Parliament’s Port Committee. Cargo handling at the approximately 50-year-old terminal is therefore likely to cease in the foreseeable future. To date, the cargo handling and logistics company Heuer has been operating the facility. According to Mr Howe, Lloyd Werft plans to moor a large floating dock in front of the quay wall. This is intended to enable future repairs and maintenance work on classes of vessel that already call at Bremerhaven but do not fit into the existing docks in the Kaiserhafen. Heuer had surrendered the leasehold rights to the site last year. The company is currently still leasing the approximately 66,000-square-metre plot.
