Germany’s largest offshore wind farm begins commercial operation

HAMBURG. The Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind farm, developed by the Danish energy group Ørsted and the investor Nuveen Infrastructure, is now in commercial operation. With an installed capacity of 913 megawatts, the project is, according to a press release, one of the largest offshore wind farms currently in operation in Germany. The farm is already Ørsted’s sixth offshore wind farm in Germany. It follows on from the Gode Wind 3 wind farm (253 megawatts), which began operations in early 2025 and is also jointly owned by Ørsted and Nuveen. Borkum Riffgrund 3 is situated around 70 kilometres off the coast in the German North Sea and covers an area of approximately 75 square kilometres. A total of 83 wind turbines, each with a rated output of 11 megawatts, have been installed at the offshore wind farm. The project has mobilised a broad European supply chain. The wind turbines and foundations were manufactured in Germany and Denmark, whilst the cables were produced in Germany and France. Around 100 German companies were involved in the construction of the wind farm.
