Around 22.2 million euros for the Port of Papenburg

23.07.2026

PAPENBURG The Lower Saxony Ministry of Economic Affairs, Transport and Construction is supporting the town of Papenburg with a grant of around 22.2 million euros. In July, State Secretary Matthias Wunderling-Weilbier (centre) presented the grant notification to Papenburg’s Mayor Vanessa Gattung (second from left) in the presence of District Administrator Marc-André Burgdorf (second from right). The state funding from the Economic Development Fund (WFF) will enable two key investments in the local port: the construction of the new inland approach to the sea lock and the expansion of the fluid mud system. The total cost of the two projects amounts to around 49.3 million euros. Speaking at the handover ceremony, Wunderling-Weilbier emphasised: “With this substantial funding, we as the state government are sending a strong signal in support of Papenburg as a business location. The renewal of the inland head of the sea lock and the expansion of the fluid mud system are essential for a more efficient and future-proof port.”
