BERLIN/HAMBURG. The Offshore Wind Energy Foundation and the German Wind Energy Association (BWE) have expressly welcomed the plan by the Federal Government’s Coordinator for Maritime Economy and Tourism, Dr Christoph Ploß, to extend the tonnage tax to vessels in the offshore wind sector. “The Federal Government’s announcement sends an important and positive signal for greater domestic maritime value creation in the offshore wind energy sector in Germany,” said Karina Würtz (photo), Managing Director of the Offshore Wind Energy Foundation. The planned measure could help reduce the existing structural disadvantages faced by German shipping companies in international competition. The BWE also regards the measure as a significant boost for the entire industry. BWE President Bärbel Heidebroek emphasised that extending the tonnage tax would strengthen wind energy both onshore and offshore. It would stabilise supply chains, improve logistics and lay the foundations for greater value creation in Germany. What matters now is swift and practical implementation.
