BRAKE Around 250 personnel from the Havariekommando and the Technisches Hilfswerk (THW) took part in a large-scale exercise in the Brake area from 26 to 28 June 2026 to practise their cooperation in oil spill response. Under conditions designed to be as realistic as possible, they demonstrated how spilled oil can be located, contained and removed from both the water and the shore following a simulated shipping accident. The exercise involved the use of both specialist equipment on land and multi-purpose workboats in the inland port of Brake. In addition, the deployment of various oil containment systems, the clean-up of shoreline areas and the coordination of large-scale personnel operations were practised. “The exercise impressively demonstrated how important it is to be well prepared for potential pollution incidents in our waters,” concluded Anka Dobslaw, State Secretary at the Lower Saxony Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Climate Protection, afterwards.
