Pistorius reaffirms the need for a second naval port

BREMERHAVEN/LEER. Federal Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius’s traditional summer tour has once again taken him to various Bundeswehr locations this year. Among other places, he visited the Naval Operations School (MOS) in Bremerhaven and the Rapid Response Command of the Medical Service in Leer in July. During his visits, Pistorius reiterated the need for a second naval port on the German North Sea coast, alongside Wilhelmshaven. Bremerhaven and Emden are considered the frontrunners, with a decision expected to be made in August or September 2026. “On the one hand, this is a question of security,” said the SPD politician. In an emergency, Germany needs a second port to be able to fall back on and to ensure accessibility. “And, of course, it is also about creating the capacity needed should, in an emergency, hundreds of thousands of allied troops, along with equipment and personnel, have to pass through Germany and land here beforehand,” explained the Defence Minister.
