Germany’s first CO₂ export terminal receives EU approval

BAD SODEN. The Bremen-based energy service provider Ambrian Energy and Messer SE & Co. KGaA, a producer of industrial gases, have announced that the planned joint venture ‘CarbonBridge’ has successfully received antitrust approval from the European Commission. This decision paves the way for the development of the eponymous terminal – Germany’s first operational CO₂ export terminal. The CarbonBridge export terminal in Bremen is set to become operational as early as 2031. Initially, the CarbonBridge joint venture is expected to achieve a maximum handling capacity of around 2.3 million tonnes per year – with plans to increase this to approximately 4 million tonnes annually in the long term. “We are delighted to have received antitrust approval for CarbonBridge,” comments Ralph Spring, Senior Manager Commercials CCUS, Messer SE & Co. KGaA. “In most projects, logistics to the final storage site are the biggest challenge. With CarbonBridge, we aim to offer a flexible solution.”
