Emden Port as a test bed for the autonomous logistics of tomorrow

06.11.2026

EMDEN. For two years, trials were carried out at the seaport of Emden to investigate how vehicles can move autonomously within logistics areas and be safely integrated into existing processes. In November 2026, Volkswagen, Deutsche Telekom, the Finnish technology company Unikie and the Bremen Institute for Production and Logistics at the University of Bremen (BIBA) successfully completed the ‘AutoLog’ innovation project, which was funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport. The Emder Hafenförderungsgesellschaft regards the project as “a strong signal”, because new technologies for vehicle logistics were tested right where logistics take place on a daily basis – in the port. The findings from Emden are now being incorporated into the further development of automated logistics processes to make operations at terminals and on factory premises more flexible, safer and more sustainable. From the perspective of Seaports of Niedersachsen, “AutoLog” demonstrated once again that the Port of Emden is not only an important hub for vehicle handling, but also a place where the future of port logistics is being tested in practice.
