Ports on the Ems Intensify Cooperation

27.02.2026

EMDEN/DÖRPEN. For more than 40 years, the two locations of Emden and Dörpen have been closely connected. Each year, more than 400 inland vessels operate between the two ports. The central driving force behind this cooperation is the UPM Nordland Papier mill in Dörpen, which sources raw materials such as pulp and liquid chalk from Emden.

On the Emden side, the companies Anker Schiffahrts-Gesellschaft mbH and Omya GmbH benefit significantly from their shipments to Dörpen.

In the future, the cooperation is set to expand further: the company epas plans to increasingly transport wind turbines and cable drums to the Emsland region via inland waterways. In addition, exchange between the ports is to be further intensified. To this end, the “Port Dialogue Emden–Dörpen” has now been launched at the initiative of CDU state parliament member Hartmut Moorkamp.
